Chiropractic Care Is Not About 'Cracking'

One of the most common things people say before their first chiropractic appointment is, “I’m nervous about being cracked.”

I completely understand why.

The word “cracking” can sound harsh. It can make it seem like something is breaking, which is not what is happening during a chiropractic adjustment.

When an adjustment creates a popping sound, this is called a cavitation. It is generally understood as a change in pressure within the joint, which can release gas and create that familiar pop or click sound.

For some people, they love the sound, or it does not bother them at all. For others, the noise can feel unsettling or make them feel nervous about starting care.

That is completely okay.

The noise is not the goal

Chiropractic care is not about chasing a popping sound.

The aim is to assess how your body is moving, understand what may be contributing to how you feel, and choose a style of care that is appropriate for you.

Sometimes that may include a manual adjustment. Other times, it may involve a gentler technique, soft tissue work, dry needling where appropriate, movement advice, ergonomic support, or a combination of approaches.

The technique should match the person in front of us, not the other way around.

There are different ways to care for the body

At Connected Health Chiropractic, care may include a range of techniques depending on your body, your goals, your history and your comfort level.

This may include:

  • manual chiropractic adjustments

  • drop piece techniques

  • pelvic blocking

  • Activator

  • Flexion Distraction

  • soft tissue work

  • dry needling

  • breathing, posture or movement guidance

  • practical advice for daily habits

Some people prefer firmer manual care. Some prefer a gentler approach. Some people are comfortable with certain techniques but not others.

That is a conversation we can have.

You are allowed to ask questions

You should feel informed about your care.

If you are nervous about a particular technique, or if there is something you would prefer to avoid, you are encouraged to say so. Your comfort matters, and there are often different ways to approach care.

A first appointment includes time to talk through your history, assess how your body is moving, discuss your findings, and explain what options may be appropriate.

There should be no mystery around what is happening or why.

Chiropractic care should be more than a sound

The popping sound that can happen with some adjustments is only one small part of chiropractic care, and it is not the measure of whether an adjustment "worked" or not.

Care may also involve helping you understand what your body is responding to, how your movement patterns may be contributing, and what small changes could support you day to day.

This might include your desk setup, phone posture, sleep position, stress, exercise, breathing patterns, or how often your body gets a chance to move.

Your body is not just a collection of separate parts. It works as a whole, and your care should reflect that.

A final thought

If the idea of being “cracked” has made you hesitate to book a chiropractic appointment, it may help to know that chiropractic care is not about forcing one technique on every person.

There are different options, different levels of pressure, and different ways to approach care.

At Connected Health Chiropractic, the aim is to provide care that feels considered, explained and adapted to the person in front of us.

If you have questions before booking, you are welcome to get in touch or book an appointment to discuss what may be appropriate for you.
