What to Expect at Your First Chiropractic Appointment

Booking your first chiropractic appointment can feel like a big step, especially if you’re not sure what actually happens in the room.
Some people come in knowing exactly what they want help with. Others arrive with a vague sense that something feels “off”, sore, tight, restricted, or not quite right in their body. Some people have seen a chiropractor before, and others have no idea what to expect.
At Connected Health Chiropractic, your first visit is designed to give us time to understand what has brought you in, how your body is currently functioning, and what kind of care may be appropriate for you.
Your first appointment starts with a conversation
Before any hands-on care happens, we start by discussing your history.
This gives us a chance to understand what you’re experiencing, how long it has been going on, what may have contributed to it, and how it is affecting your everyday life.

You might be asked about things like:
where you feel discomfort or restriction
what makes it better or worse
your work setup and daily habits
previous injuries or health history
sleep, stress and general wellbeing
exercise, movement and lifestyle factors
your goals for care
This part matters because your body does not exist in separate pieces. Neck tension, for example, may be influenced by your desk setup, phone use, sleep position, jaw tension, stress, breathing patterns, or how your upper back and ribs are moving.
The goal is to understand the bigger picture, not just chase the sore spot.
We then assess how your body is moving
After your consultation, we move into a physical assessment.
This may include looking at your posture, range of motion, joint movement, muscle tension, balance, strength, neurological signs, or other relevant tests depending on what you have come in for.

The assessment is adapted to you. Someone coming in with a recent injury will need a different approach to someone with long-term stiffness, pregnancy-related discomfort, headaches, or a general sense that their body is not moving well.
If anything in your history or examination suggests that chiropractic care may not be appropriate, or that further investigation is needed, this will be discussed with you.
We’ll discuss your findings
One of the most important parts of your first appointment is helping you understand what has come up during your history and examination.
This may include what areas are moving well, what areas may be feeling restricted or overloaded, and what may be contributing to how your body feels.
The aim is to give you a clearer understanding of what has been found, what care may be appropriate, and what the next steps could look like.
You are welcome to ask questions at any point. Your care should make sense to you.
Will care begin on the first visit?
After your history and examination, options for care will be discussed with you.
If chiropractic care is appropriate and you feel comfortable, care may begin during your first visit. This might include chiropractic adjustments, drop piece, pelvic blocking, Activator, soft tissue work, dry needling where appropriate, or other techniques depending on what your body needs and what you are comfortable with.

However, there is no one-size-fits-all approach.
Some people are ready for hands-on care straight away. Others may need a gentler start, more time to discuss their options, or further assessment before beginning care.
Chiropractic care is not about 'cracking'
A common concern people have before their first chiropractic appointment is whether they will need to be “cracked”.
The word “cracking” can be misleading. It can make it sound like something is breaking, which is not what is happening during a chiropractic adjustment.
When an adjustment creates a popping sound, this is called a cavitation. It is generally understood as a change in pressure within the joint, which can release gas and create that familiar pop or click sound.
For some people, that sound does not bother them at all. For others, the idea of it can feel uncomfortable or make them nervous.
That is completely okay.
Chiropractic care is not about chasing a noise, and a popping sound is not the only way to care for the body.
At Connected Health Chiropractic, care may also include gentler techniques such as pelvic blocking, drop piece, Activator, soft tissue work, breathing or movement guidance, ergonomic advice, and practical strategies for daily life.
The technique used should match the person in front of us, not the other way around.
What should you wear?
Wear something comfortable that you can move in.
You do not need activewear, but clothing that allows you to sit, stand, bend, turn and lie down comfortably is ideal.
If you are coming straight from work, that is completely fine. We can work around what you are wearing where possible, or provide a gown/shorts to change into.
What happens after your appointment?
After your first visit, you will usually leave with a clearer understanding of what may be going on and what your next step is.
Depending on your situation, this may include:
advice on what to do or avoid after your appointment
simple movement or posture suggestions
a recommendation for follow-up care
referral for imaging or another practitioner if needed
a plan to review your progress over time
Some people feel different quite quickly after care, while others notice changes more gradually. It is also possible to feel some temporary soreness after an appointment, particularly if your body has been guarded, tense, or irritated for a while.
If your body does anything that you do not understand or that concerns you after care, you are encouraged to contact the clinic.
The aim of your first visit
Your first appointment is not just about finding where you feel sore.
It is about taking the time to understand your body, your history, your goals, and what kind of care feels right for you.
Whether you are dealing with pain, stiffness, tension, headaches, postural strain, pregnancy-related changes, or you simply feel like your body is not moving the way it should, your first visit is a chance to start making sense of what is going on.
If you have been unsure about booking because you did not know what to expect, hopefully this gives you a clearer idea of what your first appointment at Connected Health Chiropractic may look like.
